When Direk visited Prayeen’s apartment, Prayeen asked Direk if he wanted to hear some music. Prayeen played a beautiful song in his computer and Direk asked him who sang it. Prayeen said he sang it with a smile. Direk asked, “and the composition and music”. Prayeen replied he did it on his own.

Who knew the song Direk heard that night would be a number one hit one day in Nepal. The song was none other than, “Kunai Jaduu Thiyo” that stayed on top of charts in various radio stations in the year 2003. This is the very song Pramod Upadhyaya had sang.

After that night, Direk strummed guitar and Prayeen sang in all the get together programs. Direk did not know chords for any Nepali song till then and Prayeen did not sing English songs. However, both of them had good background and timing in music and they clicked together well.

Direk had to move to Minnesota to complete Bachelors. In the mean time, Rupak came from Kathmandu and started jamming with Prayeen. They started composing songs. After Direk was done with his Bachelors, he moved back to California and joined Rupak and Prayeen.

The task of composing was not easy because Direk grew up listening to 1960s – 1970s Rock & Roll and Blues. Prayeen grew up listening to Soft and Mellow (Gazal) Music and Rupak grew up listening to late 1990s Alternate Music. However, the trio took the different taste in music as an opportunity and advantage to create new and different music.

After the band completed recording six songs, the band (Prayeen – Vocals, Dipendra – Lead, Rupak – Rhythm, Suneel – Bass, Direk – Drums) played in various cities of Northern California to get direct feedback from the audience. When the band sang, “Thaki Saken” in unplugged version in Oakland, California, for the very first time, there was literally a pin drop silence in a hall of about five hundred people. Then the band played, “Tehi Pal” and no noise at all. Well we are talking about a hall with more than 50 kids under 10 years old, who were running around all over the hall during the entire cultural program. Even the kids sat down to watch the band play. The band ended the night playing the Reggae version of “Aakashiya Chil Udyo” making everyone dance.

With the overwhelming response, the band was encouraged to record more songs and polish up the ones recorded before. With the touch of Dipendra Rai, lead guitarist of Nepal’s Jazz Band, Full Circle and Manose Singh, flutist of 1974 A.D. band, the band’s songs sounded even better.

Since then, the trio have been composing and recording music day and night in their home studio. Seeing the dedication of local students, the local Nepalese community offered to help the trio buying drums. The trio was shocked. In order to thank the seniors, the trio with the help of other students, created The Everest Club, which united local Nepalese residents and entertained Nepalese organizing various programs. The Everest Club has been raising funds to help the education sector of Nepal.

With the help of Abhishek and Shailendra, Direk’s childhood friends, the band made their first music video for “Khai Ke Bho”. Both Abhishek and Shailendra have degrees in Mass Communication and filming.

Life in the US is pretty hectic. You go to college full time, work full time and the combination of two tears you up. However, the band had a passion, the love for music, the desire to create some good sound. The trio did not let their creativity go in vain.

When others were sleeping, the band stayed up until three or four in the mornings. The trio convinced themselves saying that there is no disturbance when everyone is sleeping.

When others went out to bars and parties, the band stayed home trying to create new music that sounds good. The trio convinced themselves saying that their turn to live life up will come too.

The dedication and devotion of over four years has been ready and has been packaged in one CD. Now the time has come to see if the hard work of years will pay off. The ball is in the court of audiences and fans now.
