  Direk Shrestha

Direk was born in Freak Street, Katmandu on December 7, 1979. Freak Street being a haven for Hippies in 1970s, his father, Pushkar, was deeply influenced by 1970s western rock and roll music. His father even bought an acoustic, nylon string guitar from one of the hippies. His mother, Rajeswori, was a professional singer for Radio Nepal. She has recorded many Newari and Nepali songs. She has even recorded songs with legendary singer, Prakash Shrestha.

Direk was just 12 years old when his older brother, Saleen formed a band, The Ugly Guyz, later changed to the Uglyz. The Ugly Guyz– Saleen (Drums), Binod (Lead), Sanjeev (Bass) and Sailesh (Rhythm/Vocals) practiced every night at Direk’s residence. The Uglyz was performing in concerts all over Kathmandu just like the western rock bands in western countries as seen on Sunday Pop and MTV. This drew the attention of Direk and Rockin (younger brother) into music.

Both of them followed the footsteps of Saleen and have been drumming on and off since then. The three-generation of brothers hung out together and played music together.

Direk's first concert was In his school days In Little Angels School. Later he went to Gyanodaya High School and rocked the high school as well. Till date, Direk has played in over 50 concerts In Nepal and the US. Direk does not have any theoretical knowledge in music. But since music is in his blood, he surely can rock and isn't that what matters. Over the years, influenced by old school rock and roll and blues, he has created his own drumming style and techniques.

Education being a number one priority, the Uglyz went to different parts of the world but never gave up music.

Direk's focus was shifting from music to studies until Direk met Prayeen in the summer of 2002 in Northern California. Since then, they started playing music together. In 2004, Direk met Rupak and the trio, The Vibez, has put together their creative work into an album. In the album, Direk has played drums, percussion and guitar.
